Many of us have heard that you should trim your trees but what does that really involve? Let us tell you a bit more about what this is and why it is important to the longevity of your trees.
When speaking of "tree trimming" it is the removal of overgrown or even unwanted branches from a tree without removing the entire tree. This can be on any type of tree from a young tree to a very large old tree. As trees age they need to be properly trimmed to improve the health and often times the structure of a tree. This practice is also used to help protect your home from potentially hazardous branches that could come down in inclement weather, causing property damage.
Tree trimming is often used to remove branches that are showing signs of disease or are completely dead. This will improve the overall health of the tree and will often encourage the tree to start growing. It is recommended to trim your trees in late winter or early spring. This will help encourage new growth and will help remove any branches that were broken due to heavy snows through the winter.
While trimming your trees is very important it must be noted that you can trim a tree to much. If more than a third of a trees branches are removed in a single year, it will cause stress to the tree. When this occurs a once healthy tree can potentially die.
Often times despite our best efforts a tree will die. When this occurs there can be numerous reasons. Sometimes the cause is a disease but other times it is due to age. No matter the cause a dead tree in a yard can be potentially hazardous.
If the cause was due to a disease it can spread to other trees that you have in the yard and sometimes it can spread to other plants. Often times the best way to avoid this is to remove the diseased tree and begin treating the other plants that may have been infected. When trees are effected the structure of the tree can weaken making it more susceptible to the elements and can result in the tree falling over and potentially damaging your property.
Old trees that have died have similar structural instabilities resulting in somewhat brittle ways. For example when a branch from an old dead tree falls the bark will often times go flying off as well as chunks of wood. This debris has the potential to hurt both property and life. Due to these issues it is best to monitor your trees and remove the dead ones as soon as possible.
